‘Save Our Curlews’ Campaign

Immediate conservation action is vital if the evocative bubbling song of the Curlew is not to be lost from Shropshire forever. There is a real danger that breeding Curlews will become extinct here in the next few years unless conservation measures are taken urgently. The following links will take you to the project description and reports on recent results.

The current phase, finding and fencing nests in the Strettons and Oswestry areas, and radio-tagging chicks from these nests, and tracking them to find out what happens to them, will draw to an end in 2026. Work is now underway assessing the conclusions from this work, and what to do next. The population monitoring by Community Wildlife Groups will continue, but new, effective conservation measures need to be developed. This work will complement, and contribute to, the Curlew Action Plan in the statutory Shropshire (and Telford & Wrekin) Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS). These measures will be added to the website over the next 6 months, as they are developed.

Suggestions and proposals should be forwarded to Leo Smith, SOS Save our Curlews Campaign Co-ordinator, at leo@leosmith.org.uk.
