Whixall Moss (30 October) - Great Grey Shrike seen late morning on Welsh side of the moss by Fenn's bank area (Richard Vernon) for photo go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/shropshirebirds Andy Latham has submitted the following (edited) to help observers locate this bird which has been moving between the English and Welsh sides of the mosses: Taffy the Great Grey Shrike was on the moss this morning,(30/10) mainly in Wales (always actually) so if anyone needs it for their Welsh list here are some directions. Access from the car park at Furbers (morris's lane)and walk straight out to the moss, at the cross tracks turn right continue for a long time until you see a weather station on your left, turn left and keep walking, you'll know when you cross the border, the sky will darken and everywhere will look grey, or is that Mordor?, no I'm sure its Wales. Keep straight on at every opportunity, you should have taken 30-40 mins to reach this point, start looking to your left at any prominent perches, the shrike favoured this area (30/10). After an hour of terrorising the Fenns moss Meadow Pipit population "taffy" flew off over the moss beyond the old railway line. You now walk straight on for another 20-30mins and turn right onto the railway line (disused) and walk until you reach a large clearfell on your left and hopefully you will have relocated "taffy" perched up in this area, at least that was its routine up to 12.00 noon 30/10. Other species seen were Merlin, Peregrine, a ringtail Hen Harrier, Redpoll and Fieldfare, Redwing and Skylark. Andy.
