Field Trips 2012    

These have been compiled by the Development & Publicity Sub-Committee in the absence of an Excursion Secretary. Everyone is very welcome on these trips, you don't need to be an SOS member. They are friendly and open to beginners and experts alike.

In order to indicate the numbers proposing to go on each trip, could you please contact Sue Brealey, as Chairman of the D&P Sub-Committee, on 01952 292312, or the leader designated for the trip concerned. Please share cars if possible and remember that at some locations, amenities may not be available. Before attending, please read the Field Trip Guidelines. We look forward to seeing you.


26 February Sunday - Bury Ditches, near Clunton - by car - Leader: Dave Pearce

Full Day – Meet at Forestry Commission Car Park at 10am Grid Ref: SO 325 837

From Clunton take the road towards Brockton and B4385. Forestry Commission car park is about two miles up the road

25 March Sunday - Moore Nature Reserve - by car - Leader: Estelle Hughes

Full Day – Meet at the car park at 9am Post Code for Sat.Nav - WA4 6XE

From the A56 (from Warrington of the M56 J11) turn at the traffic lights opposite the Walton Arms public house, following the sign for Moore. From Moore village turn right into Moore Lane. Follow this road over the swingbridge to arrive at Moore Nature Reserve.

22 April Sunday -  Paxton Pits Nature Reserve - by coach - Organiser: Sue Brealey

Full Day – Meet at the Shirehall to leave promptly at 7.30am

Visiting this new site for the SOS, where there should be very good views of Nightingale amongst other wildlife.
Costs for the coach will £12.50 per person, booking with Sue Brealey from January 2012 – Paxton Pits charges £2.50 to enter the reserve. Everyone is very welcome, you don't need to be an SOS member.

17 June Sunday - Anglesey- Various sites - by car - Organiser: Sue Brealey

Full day – Meet at 9.30am in the Viewpoint Car Park Grid Ref: SH 543 714

Take A55 North Wales road to Anglesey. Once over Beaumaris Bridge turn right onto the A545 towards Beaumaris. The car Park is about half mile on the right overlooking the the Menai Strait


July on a Sunday to be arranged - Catherton Common, Berrington & other sites - by car - Leader: Jim Almond

Full day – Meet at Grid Ref: SO 622 778

This will be an insect looking trip mainly for Butterflies & Dragonflies at various sites around Shropshire. Due to the nature of this type of wildlife watching, it is weather dependent. As such the date and meeting time will be decided nearer the month in question. Contact Jim for details


18 August Birdfair 2012, Saturday - Rutland Water - by coach - Organiser: Sue Brealey

Full day – Leaving the Shirehall promptly at 7.30am

Costs include £12.50 for the coach fare plus the entrance fee to the Fair itself. For those who have not gone before this is an ideal way of finding out about anything to do with bird watching, from equipment, to optics, to travels, plus lots of other events.

16 September Sunday - RSPB Burton Mere Wetlands (formally Inner Marsh Farm) - by car - Organiser: Sue Brealey

Full Day – Meet at Burton Farm Reserve at 10am.
Please note that as of September 2011 there are 2 parts to this reserve. Please park at the old familiar part, and the afternoon will be spent at the new site.

Directions: Take A540 from Chester, follow signs for Ness Gardens. At Burton Village bear left into Station Road, and keep going to Burton Point Farm.

21 October Sunday - RSPB Ynys Hir - by car - Organiser: Sue Brealey

Full Day – Meet at Car Park at 10am Grid Ref: SN 682 961
Directions: Take A 487 from Machynlleth towards Aberystwyth, turning right just after Glandyfi. It is then about a mile to the Car Park.
